Balanced Attack?
Heading into the home opener against the Cheifs there's a lot of talk about Stafford and the passing game - and rightfully so. Stafford showed that he is the QB the fans hoped he would be. He threw for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns, two of which went to Calvin. Not a bad taste of what might become one of the best QB/WR combos of our time.
What got mentioned, but it seems only in passing, is the lack of success in the run game. When it was brought up, most people pointed out that it was better than last year (which isn't saying much) and that Schwartz and Co. ran a balanced attack (I think it was something like 33 pass/36 runs). Don't get me wrong, I'll take a win anyway they can get it, but I'm expecting great things from this team. Without a good run game things might get tough in the thick of the season.
The strong passing game lit up the Bucs and gave the Lions a strong lead, but in the fourth quarter when all the they had left to do is run out the clock they almost gave up the game. The Lions had a total of 126 rushing yards - not terrible - but they should be doing better. This team needs a better run threat. Teams know how deadly Stafford's pass game can be, but the Lions still can't get a run game going. Best has been in the offense for over a year now and as far as I've heard completely healed from his shoe fulls of turf toes. He is supposed to be a big play back. His longest gain was a measly 9 yards. The team's longest rush was a 20 yarder by Burleson - nobody else came close.
I know it's only the first game of the year, so I'm hoping things change up soon. Jerome Harrison is still new and will hopefully continue to improve and Keiland Williams hasn't played a game yet. Schwartz says they aren't concerned about a balanced attack and that they will run whatever the defense gives them. And who knows, maybe Stafford's arm is so good the Lions won't need a strong run game. Only (game) time will tell, but a strong run game could mean the difference between a run for the playoffs that so many are already predicting and a run for the Big Game.
